The LBBCG has got education and environmental team majorly focused on environmental awareness and conservation. Usually, this team is responsible for educating school going kids on environmental awareness and conservation.
We do this by first visiting the school and booking an appointment with the school and prepare for the set date. Every school sets the date and time so that we don’t interfere with their learning. Our team has since visited a total thirteen (13) schools within Lake Baringo. We visited two secondary schools i.e. Lake Baringo And Meisori Secondary Schools and ten (10) primary schools within Lake Baringo, which include; Salabani, Lomayana, Meisori, Kapsoi, Kampi Ya Samaki, Ngenyin, Chebarsiat, Moinoni, Kokwa and Kirepare Primary Schools.
We always try to make the kids understand the environment, component of environment, conservation as a whole, protection of IBAs, benefits of each component of environment and the shortcomings of destroying these components of environment. We also show them a video of an area that is well conserved within this locality and the opposite,
In addition, the team donates dustbins, brooms and seedlings. We demonstrate to them how to plant, protect the seedling from being destroyed by goats and any other thing that may destroy the seedling and nurture them to maturity. We also give the kids seedlings to help them extend planting skills at their homes. The team also motivates the kids with stationary gifts for those who nurtured their seedlings well.
Our nursery team plants seedlings and manages seedbed. The team ensures there is enough seedlings for distribution to schools and the neighboring community. Pest infestation, nursery space and scarcity of water pipes remains the main challenge the nursery team is experiencing.
Lake Baringo Biodiversity Conservation Group (LBBCG) has been conducting biodiversity monitoring annually. The team consists of the members with multifaceted skills and approach, professional ornithologists and amateur bird watchers. While equipped with gadget such as binoculars, cameras and avian books that are valuable during the census, the team do boat ride around the Lake Baringo and thereafter visiting a nearby cliffs.
The methodology involves territorial mapping that entails recording the number of birds sighted. Also, noting the specific location as well as other characteristics such as plumage and relative age that shall inform assessment. The Islands Covered in Lake Baringo Consist of Ol-kokwe, Ruko Island, Samatian Island and Parmolok Island whereas on the mainland IBAs include; Kapsoi, Meisori, Salabani, Kiserian Ngenyin and Kampi Ya Samaki.
